NetScope

DNS filtering and domain activity on Android.

A public APK is in preparation. The DNS foundation is described below; experimental capabilities are labelled separately.

What is NetScope?

NetScope uses the Android VPN interface to receive DNS queries within the selected scope, check domains against rules and display local history. It is the first WABISC product.

What it helps with

It helps restrict requests to domains in an ad and tracker blocklist, inspect domain activity and investigate unwanted blocking. Domain filtering does not remove every ad element and may affect useful site features.

How it differs from a conventional VPN

The DNS build does not send all internet traffic through a remote VPN server and is not designed to change your public IP address. The VPN icon indicates an active local Android interface, not anonymity or encryption of every connection.

How filtering works

Rules are checked on the device. For a blocked DNS query, NetScope returns a domain-not-found response. Allowed queries are sent to Cloudflare using DNS-over-HTTPS: local checking does not make name resolution entirely local.

The AdAway list has a bundled copy and an on-demand update. If an update fails, the current rules stay active.

The DNS foundation

  • On-device domain history and blocking decisions.
  • A domain allowlist and application DNS policies.
  • Activity grouped by app when attribution is available.
  • Single-app inspection in the DNS build and diagnostic session export.

Experimental: routing and proxies

Preview explores IPv4/TCP for explicitly selected apps through Direct or an external SOCKS5 proxy. Specific HTTPS transfer scenarios were tested on a Samsung device; this is not a general-purpose production VPN.

In Preview, device mode covers configured participants. General UDP/QUIC, IPv6 and compatibility with every app are not claimed. A proxy failure has no hidden Direct fallback.

Development and limitations

Experimental routing needs further compatibility and reliability testing. Fresh YouTube media delivery through the proxy remains unconfirmed; DNS filtering does not promise to remove YouTube’s in-stream ads.

Feature dates and a public roadmap have not been approved. Verified public release details will accompany the APK.
